Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Happy Sunday! Today is also the feast of the great founder of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuit Order, St. Ignatius Loyola (+1556).

His was a remarkable life -- a soldier converted while wounded by reading the lives of the saints in his convalescence; founded the Jesuits in 1540 with the approval of Pope Paul III; wrote the magnificent Spiritual Exercises; founded the Roman College -- all of this Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, for the greater glory of God.  At his death in Rome in 1556AD, his order had over a thousand members, 76 houses, 12 provinces, and had members in modern countries including Brazil, India, and Japan in the missions there.

The traditional office of Matins provides this brief biography:
"A Spaniard, born at Loyola in Cantabria, Ignatius first served in the court of the Most Catholic King and then in the army. In the defence of Pampeluna, he was wounded. As he lay in a long convalescence, the chance reading of some holy books gave him a burning desire to follow in the footsteps of Christ and the Saints. He went to Montserrat, hung up his arms before the Altar of the Blessed Virgin, and spent a whole night in prayer, thus entering on his new profession of holy warfare. The austerity of his life was extraordinary. He was ignorant of letters but, refreshed by brilliant illuminations from God, he composed the Exercises, a wonderful book approved by the Apostolic See and also by its usefulness to everyone. At Paris he was joined by nine companions of different nations all studying at the university, and there at Montmartre he laid the first foundations of the Society of Jesus which were later completed at Rome. To the three customary vows was added one to carry out the command of the Apostolic See concerning the Missions. Ignatius gave aid in increasing the beauty of churches, in teaching catechism, and in fostering attendance at sermons and the reception of the sacraments. He was most zealous for the spread of the Christian religion everywhere, and exercised a wonderful power over demons. In the sixty-fifth year of his age, he went to receive the embrace of his Lord, whose greater glory he had always sought in all things. Pius XI appointed and declared him the heavenly patron of all spiritual exercises or retreats."

St. Ignatius of Loyola is buried in the Church of the Gesu in Roma, one of the prototypes of the Baroque Church.  He is buried in the left transept in a chapel that was the work of the great Baroque artist Andrea Pozzo (+1709AD)

Feast of St. Martha

Today is the feast of St. Martha, a disciple of Christ, and famous for her asking Our Lord to send Mary to help her in the kitchen, this from the Gospel of St. Luke, Chapter 10: "38 In one of the villages he entered during his journey, a woman called Martha entertained him in her house. 39 She had a sister called Mary; and Mary took her place at the Lord’s feet, and listened to his words. 40 Martha was distracted by waiting on many needs; so she came to his side, and asked, Lord, art thou content that my sister should leave me to do the serving alone? Come, bid her help me. 41 Jesus answered her, Martha, Martha, how many cares and troubles thou hast! 42 But only one thing is necessary; and Mary has chosen for herself the best part of all, that which shall never be taken away from her. "

St. Martha should be much more famous for her words of Faith in John 11:27: "Yes, Lord, she told him, I have learned to believe that thou art the Christ; thou art the Son of the living God; it is for thy coming the world has waited."

By longstanding tradition, St. Martha is the sister of St. Lazarus, and the Mary mentioned above is St. Mary Magdalene, whose feast we celebrated a week ago. Indeed, Pope Francis expanded today's feast to include all three of them in 2021.

As you might expect, St. Martha is a patroness and example to those who cook and keep house!

Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

This day, 26 July, marks the Feast on which we recall, celebrate, and invoke the intercession of the parents of the Blessed Mother, Sts. Anne and Joachim.  Traditionally, this day focuses most especially on St. Anne, grandmother of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.  I shall revisit St. Joachim on his traditional observance.

Here is a beautiful text of St. John Damascene (+749AD) from that Patron Saint site:
"Joachim and Anne, how blessed a couple! All creation is indebted to you. For at your hands the Creator was offered a gift excelling all other gifts: a chaste mother, who alone was worthy of him. Joachim and Anne, how blessed and spotless a couple! You will be known by the fruit you have borne, as the Lord says: “By their fruits you will know them.” The conduct of your life pleased God and was worthy of your daughter. For by the chaste and holy life you led together, you have fashioned a jewel of virginity: she who remained a virgin before, during, and after giving birth. She alone for all time would maintain her virginity in mind and soul as well as in body. Joachim and Anne, how chaste a couple! On this feast of St. Anne, the mother of Our Lady, and grandmother of Our Divine Lord, Jesus Christ, let us recall on of the great churches in honor of this great saint-- the Basilica of St. Anne-de-Beaupré in the Canadian province of Quebec.  This Basilica just celebrated the 350th anniversary of the location being a center of devotion to St. Anne in 2008.  Here is a link to the official site of the Basilica:

The Old Catholic Encyclopedia gives an account of the founding of the Basilica:
"Devotion to Saint Anne, in Canada, goes back to the beginning of New France, and was brought thither by the first settlers and early missionaries. The hardy pioneers soon began to till the fertile soil of the Beaupré hillside; in the region which now forms the parish of Sainte Anne de Beaupré the first houses date from the year 1650. Nor was it long before the settlers built themselves a chapel where they might meet for Divine worship. One of their number, the Sieur Etienne Lessard, offered to give the land required at the spot which the church authorities should find suitable. On 13 March, 1658, therefore, the missionary, Father Vignal, came to choose the site and to bless the foundation of the proposed chapel which, by general consent, was to be dedicated to St. Anne. The very day the Saint showed how favourably she viewed the undertaking by healing Louis Guimont, an inhabitant of Beaupré, who suffered terribly from rheumatism of the loins. Full of confidence in St. Anne, he came forward and placed three stones in the foundations of the new building, whereupon he found himself suddenly and completely cured of his ailment.
This first authentic miracle was the precursor of countless other graces and favours of all kinds. For two centuries and a half the great wonder-worker has ceaselessly and lavishly shown her kindness to all the sufferers who from all parts of North America flock every year to Beaupré to implore her help. The old church was begun in 1676, and used for worship until 1876, when it was replaced by the present one, opened in October of that year. This last was built of cut stone, by means of contributions from all the Catholics of Canada. The offerings made by pilgrims have defrayed the cost of fittings and decoration. It is two hundred feet long, and one hundred wide, including the side chapels. Leo XIII raised it to the rank of a minor basilica 5 May, 1887; on 19 May, 1889, it was solemnly consecrated by Cardinal Taschereau, Archbishop of Quebec. It has been served by the Redemptorists since 1878. On either side of the main doorway are huge pyramids of crutches, walking-sticks, bandages, and other appliances left behind by the cripples, lame, and sick, who, having prayed to St. Anne at her shrine, have gone home healed."  [cf., Old Catholic Encyclopedia: St. Anne de Beaupre]

The current Basilica, built in 1926 after the original was destroyed by fire, boasts several significant relics of St. Anne, and remains a popular place of pilgrimage [this blogger went on his honeymoon there].

Feast of St. James the Greater and St. Christopher

Today is the great feast day of the Apostle, St. James the Greater, and also the feast of the famous patron of travelers, St. Christopher.  On such an occasion, we should say something, at least briefly, on each.

St. James the Greater was one of the twelve Apostles chosen by our Divine Lord, a son of Zebedee and Salome (cf.  Matthew 27:56Mark 15:4016:1).  He was, further, the brother of St. John the Evangelist, the Beloved Apostle.

The following account from the Old Catholic Encyclopedia sums up St. James and his ministry rather well:
"The Galilean origin of St. James in some degree explains the energy of temper and the vehemence of character which earned for him and St. John the name of Boanerges, "sons of thunder" (Mark 3:17); the Galilean race was religious, hardy, industrious, brave, and the strongest defender of the Jewish nation.
When John the Baptist proclaimed the kingdom of the Messias, St. John became a disciple (John 1:35); he was directed to "the Lamb of God" and afterwards brought his brother James to the Messias; the obvious meaning of John 1:41, is that St. Andrew finds his brother (St. Peter) first and that afterwards St. John (who does not name himself, according to his habitual and characteristic reserve and silence about himself) finds his brother (St. James). The call of St. James to the discipleship of the Messias is reported in a parallel or identical narration by Matthew 4:18-22Mark 1:19 sq.; and Luke 5:1-11. The two sons of Zebedee, as well as Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew with whom they were in partnership (Luke 5:10), were called by the Lord upon the Sea of Galilee, where all four with Zebedee and his hired servants were engaged in their ordinary occupation of fishing. The sons of Zebedee "forthwith left their nets and father, and followed him" (Matthew 4:22), and became "fishers of men".
St. James was afterwards with the other eleven called to the Apostleship (Matthew 10:1-4Mark 3:13-19Luke 6:12-16Acts 1:13). In all four lists the names of Peter and Andrew, James and John form the first group, a prominent and chosen group (cf. Mark 13:3); especially Peter, James, and John. These three Apostles alone were admitted to be present at the miracle of the raising of Jairus's daughter (Mark 5:37Luke 8:51), at the Transfiguration (Mark 9:1Matthew 17:1Luke 9:28), and the Agony in Gethsemani (Matthew 26:37Mark 14:33). The fact that the name of James occurs always (except in Luke 8:519:28Acts 1:13 — Greek Text) before that of his brother seems to imply that James was the elder of the two. It is worthy of notice that James is never mentioned in the Gospel of St. John; this author observes a humble reserve not only with regard to himself, but also about the members of his family.
Several incidents scattered through the Synoptics suggest that James and John had that particular character indicated by the name "Boanerges," sons of thunder, given to them by the Lord (Mark 3:17); they were burning and impetuous in their evangelical zeal and severe in temper. The two brothers showed their fiery temperament against "a certain man casting out devils" in the name of the Christ; John, answering, said: "We [James is probably meant] forbade him, because he followeth not with us" (Luke 9:49). When the Samaritans refused to receive Christ, James and John said: "Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?" (Luke 9:54; cf. 9:49)." The site most associated with St. James the Greater now is, of course, the site of relics in Compostela in Galicia, Spain.  The great Shrine of Santiago de Compostella is one of the great pilgrimage sites in all Christendom.  Indeed, the great Camino, or pilgrimage, is still a popular way to arrive at the holy site.  The authenticity of the relics of Compostella is attested to by Pope Leo XIII in his Bull, "Omnipotens Deus," of 1 November, 1884.  Here is a link to the site of the great Cathedral at Compostella: Catedral de Santiago, Espana

Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, Apostle to the Apostles

Today is the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene -- the "apostle to the Apostles" as she is known, for it was she that brought word of the Resurrection to the Apostles.

This Old Catholic Encyclopedia notes: "In the New Testament she is mentioned among the women who accompanied Christ and ministered to Him (Luke 8:2-3), where it is also said that seven devils had been cast out of her (Mark 16:9). She is next named as standing at the foot of the cross (Mark 15:40Matthew 27:56John 19:25Luke 23:49). She saw Christ laid in the tomb, and she was the first recorded witness of the Resurrection."


Pope St. Gregory the Great said of her: "When Mary Magdalen came to the tomb and did not find the Lord’s body, she thought it had been taken away and so informed the disciples. After they came and saw the tomb, they too believed what Mary had told them. The text then says: “The disciples went back home,” and it adds: “but Mary wept and remained standing outside the tomb.” We should reflect on Mary’s attitude and the great love she felt for Christ; for though the disciples had left the tomb, she remained. She was still seeking the one she had not found, and while she sought she wept; burning with the fire of love, she longed for him who she thought had been taken away. And so it happened that the woman who stayed behind to seek Christ was the only one to see him. For perseverance is essential to any good deed, as the voice of truth tell us: 'Whoever perseveres to the end will be saved.'" (From the Catholic Saints Info Page, linked below).

Feast of Elijah the Prophet

Today is the feast of the great Old Testament Prophet, Elijah [Elias].  While he didn't author a book of the Scriptures like Isaiah or Jeremiah, he certainly deserves renown for the greatness of his mission, the boldness of his action, and the firmness of his faith.  Elijah is a great man, indeed.  His life is discussed in 1 Kings 17- 2 Kings 2.

The Old Catholic Encyclopedia says of Elijah:
"The loftiest and most wonderful prophet of the Old Testament. What we know of his public life is sketched in a few popular narratives enshrined, for the most part, in the First (Third) Book of Kings. These narratives, which bear the stamp of an almost contemporary age, very likely took shape in Northern Israel, and are full of the most graphic and interesting details. Every part of the prophet's life therein narrated bears out the description of the writer of Ecclesiasticus: He was 'as a fire, and his word burnt like a torch' (48:1). The times called for such a prophet. Under the baneful influence of his Tyrian wife Jezabel, Achab, though perhaps not intending to forsake altogether Yahveh's worship, had nevertheless erected in Samaria a temple to the Tyrian Baal (1 Kings 16:32) and introduced a multitude of foreign priests (xviii 19); doubtless he had occasionally offered sacrifices to the pagan deity, and, most of all, hallowed a bloody persecution of the prophets of Yahveh."

Elijah, then, was the great prophet of God to the wayward northern tribes of Israel, who had catastrophically abandoned the faithfulness to the covenant with God.  Thus, he is a character of the 9th century BC.

On a personal level, his bold confrontation with the false prophets of Baal [1 Kings 18] -- and his blunt ecumenism in dealing with them after their defeat -- along with his being taken up in 2 Kings 2 are striking and memorable, indeed.  May we have such zeal and such a blessed end.

In the Latin Rite, his feast is listed in the Roman Martyrology, and in the Eastern Churches, his feast occupies a prominent place on the liturgical calendar.  He is, in fact, the patron saint of Bosnia.  Likewise, it is a particular day of celebration for members of the Order of Mount Carmel.

Elijah is particularly associated with Mt. Carmel -- the Arab name for the mountain is a reference to the prophet -- and venerated by those, his spiritual children.

I would also note that it is possible for members of the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular to receive a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, today.  The official site of the Carmelite Order notes:
"New members may gain plenary indulgences on the day they join the Confraternity and on the following feasts: Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (16 July), St. Elias, prophet (20 July), St. Simon Stock (16 May), St. Therese of the Child Jesus (1 October), St. Teresa of Jesus (15 October), all the Carmelite Saints (14 November), and St. John of the Cross (14 December), provided they fulfil the usual conditions: going to confession and communion, saying a prayer for the intentions of the Pope and renewing the promise to observe the commitments to the Confraternity."  Order of Mt. Lest that language make it seem only new members may receive the indulgence, this blogger did contact the Secretariat General of the Order, inquiring:
"[D]o members enjoy the opportunity of gaining the plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, on those feast days every year, or only while 'new members.'"
The response: "As you write, everyone can get the plenary indulgence under the usual conditions."

Annual Cicadas & their Songs

Having now observed the summer solstice nearly a month ago, we are increasingly treated to the buzzing calls of the Cicadas of the genus Neotibicen and Megatibicen across the Eastern United States.  These, unlike the Periodical Cicadas of the genus Magicicada who make their appearance every 17 or 13 years, are with us every year.  These unique bugs produce an incredibly loud and intense call that is unique to each species.  They are, for reference, members of the order Hemiptera (true bugs), and family Cicadidae.

An understanding of the individual species and their unique calls makes listening to their chorus that much more enjoyable.  The buzz of the Neotibicen and Megatibicen is a far cry from the wail of the Magicicada -- as different as the greens and browns are from the reds and blacks in their appearance.  For more on the Magicicada, you might visit my earlier blog post: Brood II: A tale of three species

The genus of annual, or dog-day, Cicadas of the Eastern United States was, as of July 2015, split into multiple new genera from the original genus of Tibicen [which means "flute player" in Latin].  Those in Europe retain that generic name, but those in the Eastern USA are now designated Neotibicen  [So, "new flute-player;" appropriate for New World species.] or Megatibicen ["Large flute-player"], while those in the Western USA are Hadoa [Apparently from the Apache for "singer."]  You can read the taxonomic paper that resulted in these changes here  Note especially the wonderful, and complete, photographs of the species on what are pages 19 and 20, and are labelled in the paper as 237 and 238: "Molecular phylogenetics, diversification, and systematics of Tibicen," by KATHY B. Each species of Cicada has a unique buzz -- so if you know their sound, you can identify the type of Cicada, even without seeing it.  Of course, the easiest way to learn which species of Cicada is buzzing in your backyard or on the roadside is to consult recordings.  Happily, there are a few quality sites to help you with just that!

This website, Insect Singers: Cicadas of the Eastern United States, is another useful resource.  Go ahead, listen, and see if you can figure out what that fellow singing in your tree is, specifically!

Martyrs of Revolution: the Carmelites of Compiegne



Today is the feast of the Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne, France, who were put to death during the French Revolution on this day in the year 1794AD at the tail end of the Reign of Terror.

These blessed Carmelite martyrs were executed for their faithfulness to the Catholic Faith and their religious vows in the face of the demonic and militantly secularist French Revolutionary government of the Reign of Terror.

God chooses the weak, and makes them strong.  These little sisters were not broken by the fury and malice of that Revolution.

How moving the last words of these holy souls, as Father Zuhlsdorf relates on his blog:

Their story was made into a novella, in 1931, by Gertrude von le Fort, entitle The Song at the Scaffold; a liberetto by Georges Bernanos; and based on the Bernanos text, an Opera by Francis Poulenc, Dialogues of the Carmelites in 1957.

The closing scene of the Opera by Poulenc -- the execution of the sisters -- is moving, indeed.  They sing a haunting version of the Salve Regina as, one by one, they are guillotined.  There is some introduction before the sound of the guillotine begins -- and it is heart wrenching to hear the voices dwindle to one, and then none:

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and seems a good moment to recall the history of this feast and the particular place the mountain, Mount Carmel, had in the Scriptures.

I would also note that it is possible for members of the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular to receive a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, today.  The official site of the Carmelite Order notes:
"New members may gain plenary indulgences on the day they join the Confraternity and on the following feasts: Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (16 July), St. Elias, prophet (20 July), St. Simon Stock (16 May), St. Therese of the Child Jesus (1 October), St. Teresa of Jesus (15 October), all the Carmelite Saints (14 November), and St. John of the Cross (14 December), provided they fulfil the usual conditions: going to confession and communion, saying a prayer for the intentions of the Pope and renewing the promise to observe the commitments to the Confraternity."  Order of Mt. Carmel: Confraternities

Lest that language make it seem only new members may receive the indulgence, this blogger did contact the Secretariat General of the Order, inquiring:
"[D]o members enjoy the opportunity of gaining the plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, on those feast days every year, or only while 'new members.'"
The response: "As you write, everyone can get the plenary indulgence under the usual conditions."

The following is the account of the Old Catholic Encyclopedia on today's feast:

"This feast was instituted by the Carmelites between 1376 and 1386 under the title 'Commemoratio B. Marif Virg. duplex' to celebrate the victory of their order over its enemies on obtaining the approbation of its name and constitution from Honorius III on 30 Jan., 1226 (see Colvenerius, 'Kal. Mar.', 30 Jan. 'Summa Aurea', III, 737). The feast was assigned to 16 July, because on that date in 1251, according to Carmelite traditions, the scapular was given by the Blessed Virgin to St. Simon Stock; it was first approved by Sixtus V in 1587. After Cardinal Bellarmine had examined the Carmelite traditions in 1609, it was declared the patronal feast of the order, and is now celebrated in the Carmelite calendar as a major double of the first class with a vigil and a privileged octave (like the octave of Epiphany, admitting only a double of the first class) under the title 'Commemoratio solemnis B.V.M. de Monte Carmelo'. By a privilege given by Clement X in 1672, some Carmelite monasteries keep the feast on the Sunday after 16 July, or on some other Sunday in July. In the seventeenth century the feast was adopted by several dioceses in the south of Italy, although its celebration, outside of Carmelite churches, was prohibited in 1628 by a decree contra abusus. On 21 Nov., 1674, however, it was first granted by Clement X to Spain and its colonies, in 1675 to Austria, in 1679 to Portugal and its colonies, and in 1725 to the Papal States of the Church, on 24 Sept., 1726, it was extended to the entire Latin Church by Benedict XIII. The lessons contain the legend of the scapular; the promise of the Sabbatine privilege was inserted into the lessons by Paul V about 1614. The Greeks of southern Italy and the Catholic Chaldeans have adopted this feast of the "Vestment of the Blessed Virgin Mary". The object of the feast is the special predilection of Mary for those who profess themselves her servants by wearing her scapular (see CARMELITES)."

Mount Carmel, in modern Israel.

Mount Carmel itself was the site of Elias (Elijah) challenging the pagans, as we read in 1 Kings 18:

"After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elias, in the third year, saying: Go, and show yourself to Achab, that I may give rain upon the face of the earth. 2 And Elias went to show himself to Achab, and there was a grievous famine in Samaria. 3 And Achab called Abdias the governor of his house: now Abdias feared the Lord very much. 4 For when Jezabel killed the prophets of the Lord, he took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty and fifty in caves, and fed them with bread and water. 5 And Achab said to Abdias: Go into the land unto all fountains of waters, and into all valleys, to see if we can find grass, and save the horses and mules, that the beasts may not utterly perish. 6 And they divided the countries between them, that they might go round about them: Achab went one way, and Abdias another way by himself. 7 And as Abdias was in the way, Elias met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said: Are you my lord Elias? 8 And he answered: I am. Later, of course, the first members of the Carmelite order lived on this mountain in the 12th century.  There patroness is Our Lady, Mother of God, under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

St. Bonaventure, OFM, Cardinal, Doctor of the Church

On 15 July 1274AD, the Franciscan Cardinal-Bishop of Albano, St. Bonaventure, passed to his eternal reward.  This great theologian deserves to be much better known -- not just as a name, but as a Seraphic Doctor of the Church and one of greatest sons of St. Francis of Assisi.

St. Bonaventure was born at Civita di Bagnoregio in Lazio in 1221AD, as Giovanni di Fidanza.  Incidentally, his hometown is a gorgeous and striking location.  You might note, The Official Website of Civita di Bagnoregio or this promotional video featuring the town presented by the Region of Lazio:


It seems the young Giovanni was saved from a dangerous illness as a child through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi, and he entered the Order of the Seraphic Francis as Bonaventure around 1240.

St. Bonaventure would study under the great medieval theologian Alexander of Hales at the University of Paris.  St. Bonaventure would end up a doctor of theology holding a chair at the University of Paris during the 1250s; a time of great controversy at the university over mendicant professors.  This made St. Bonaventure a fellow faculty member with the Dominican, St. Thomas Aquinas.

Here is one of his more famous works, the Itinerarium Mentis ad Deum, in translation: St. Bonaventure, Journey of the Mind into God

St. Bonaventure would serve as the 7th Minister General of the Franciscan Order from 1257-1274.  Pope Blessed Gregory X named him Cardinal-Bishop of Albano (Laziale) in 1273, and summoned him to participate in the Second Council of Lyons (1272-1274), the council to which St. Thomas Aquinas was travelling when he passed away in 1274AD.  The council concluded as St. Bonaventure died that July in Lyons.

Here is the life of St. Bonaventure as related by the traditional hour of Matins for his feast:
"Born at Bagnorea in Tuscany, Bonaventure entered the Order of St. Francis of Assisi as a young man. Here he gave himself to study, and made such progress under his teacher. Alexander of Hales, that after seven years he publicly interpreted the book of Sentences at Paris, and gained the highest praise. He was a man of the greatest sweetness and humility, with a most ardent devotion to the Passion of Christ the Lord. When he was only thirty-five he was made Minister General of the whole Order. He carried out this office so prudently that he gained fame not only for his learning and holiness, but also for his diplomacy and skill. Because of this fame, Pope Gregory X made him Cardinal Bishop of Albano. He wrote many very learned works, not the least of which were his commentaries on the four books of the Sentences. He died at Lyons while the Council was in progress, at the age of forty-three. He was enrolled among the Saints by Sixtus IV, and Sixtus V gave him the title of Seraphic Doctor."

The Seraphic Doctor was canonized in 1482 by Pope Sixtus IV and named a Doctor of the Church in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V; two Franciscan popes, incidentally.  Although he died on 15 July, his feast was long celebrated on 14 July (owing to the 15th already being the feast of Emperor St. Henry II); it was shifted to 15 July in the revised liturgical calendar of 1970.

It seems the only surviving relic of St. Bonaventure is his right arm, which is in the old Cathedral of Bagnoregio (the diocese of that city was suppressed in 1986 and made a part of the diocese of Viterbo; the title is kept alive as a titular see of Balneoregium).  The rest of his body in Lyons was destroyed, first by Huguenots in the 16th century, and the rest disappeared in the French Revolution.

Feast of St. Maria Goretti


Today is a feast day of a recent martyr for the virtue of holy purity, St. Maria Goretti (+1902), of Nettuno, Lazio, Italy.  She is such a splendid example of purity in our profoundly impure and immodest age -- she was willing even to die rather than consent to grave sin.  She not only showed the fortitude of her chastity in the face of an attack, but she also forgave her attacker on her very deathbed.  Here we have purity and charity in heroic form, and all of this in a girl of a tender 12 years of age.  God, indeed, chooses the weak and makes them strong.

From that site, we have a splendid excerpt from the 1950AD homily of Pope Pius XII delivered on the occasion of her canonization -- this in the presence of her mother and repentant murderer:

"It is well known how this young girl had to face a bitter struggle with no way to defend herself. Without warning a vicious stranger burst upon her, bent on raping her and destroying her childlike purity. In that moment of crisis she could have spoken to her Redeemer in the words of that classic, The Imitation of Christ: 'Though tested and plagued by a host of misfortunes, I have no fear so long as your grace is with me. It is my strength, stronger than any adversary; it helps me and give me guidance.' With splendid courage she surrendered herself to God and his grace and so gave her life to protect her virginity. The life of a simple girl – I shall concern myself only with highlights – we can see as worthy of heaven. Even today people can look upon it with admiration and respect. Parents can learn from her story how to raise their God-given children in virtue, courage, and holiness; they can learn to train them in the Catholic faith so that, when put to the test, God’s grace will support them and they will come through undefeated, unscathed, and untarnished. From Maria’s story carefree children and young people with their zest for life can learn not to be led astray by attractive pleasures which are not only ephemeral and empty but also sinful. Instead they can fix their sights on achieving Christian moral perfection, however difficult that course may prove. With determination and God’s help all of us can attain that goal by persistent effort and prayer. Not all of us are expected to die a martyr‘s death, but we are all called to the pursuit of Christian virtue. So let us all, with God’s grace, strive to reach the goal that the example of the virgin martyr, Saint Maria Goretti, sets before us. Through her prayers to the Redeemer may all of us, each in his own way, joyfully try to follow the inspiring example of Maria Goretti who now enjoys eternal happiness in heaven."

#IndulgenceLifestyle: How?

Today I want to survey the variety and types of indulgences that the Catholic Church, by her apostolic authority, offers to the faithful.  For more on what they are, note my post of yesterday...

To start, you might note that one can gain an indulgence for oneself or for the faithful departed in Purgatory (Norms on Indulgences, N3).

Notable, too, the distinction between the plenary indulgence -- which remits ALL temporal punishment due for sins -- and the partial indulgence, which "obtain, in addition to the remission of temporal punishment acquired by the action itself, an equal remission of punishment through the intervention of the Church." (Norms on Indulgences, N4)  To receive any indulgence, you must be "baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least at the completion of the prescribed works." (Norms, N17)  For the partial indulgence, only "inward contrition and an action to which a partial indulgence is attached" with at least the general intention to gain it also necessary. (Norms, N4 & N17)

For the plenary indulgence, however, there must also be the exclusion of all attachment to sin, and these three conditions, aside from the indulgenced work: "sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff....A single sacramental confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences; but Holy Communion must be received and prayer for the intention of the Holy Father must be recited for the gaining of each plenary indulgence...the three conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the prescribed work." (Norms, N20)  If these conditions are not all met, the plenary indulgence is then partial.

Note, finally, that those indulgences associated with visiting some place also require the recitation of the Our Father and Creed. (Norms, N19)  It is also possible to receive such a place-based indulgence from noon of the day previous the one noted. (Norms, N14)

What are these indulgences, then?  Let us take a look.

For the indulgences below, those in bold I think can be routinely sought, those underlined are plenary, and those in italics are partial.

Let us proceed, and begin with the four general grants:

I) "A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raising their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation."  Hence, prayer in the midst of living one's state in life is indulgenced!

II) "A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, led by the spirit of faith, give compassionately of themselves or of their goods to serve their brothers in need."  Here we find an indulgence for almsgiving.  Do note that this is not, any more than it was in the 16th century, "buying indulgences."

III) "A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, in a spirit of penance, voluntarily abstain from something that is licit and pleasing to them."  Here we find an indulgence for "fasting."

IV) "A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, in the particular circumstances of daily life, voluntarily give explicit witness to the their faith before others."  Thus, after prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we find an indulgence for participating in the missionary mandate of the Church.

In addition to these four general grants, the Church also provides for a number of other particular grants of indulgences, which are listed under 33 grants in the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum (or, in the published English edition, the Manual of Indulgences).

Here are summaries for these 33 grants:

1) There is a plenary indulgence  for consecrating a family to the Sacred Heart or Holy Familywith a partial indulgence on the anniversary.

2) There is a plenary indulgence for publicly reciting the act of dedication of the human race to Christ the King on that feastpartial on all other days.

3) There is a plenary indulgence for publicly reciting the act of reparation to the Sacred Heart on that feast; partial on all other days.

4) There is a plenary indulgence granted to those that receive the Urbi et Orbi blessing of the Supreme Pontiff.

5) Participating in a celebration of a day designated for "religious intentions" (e.g., vocations) has granted a plenary indulgencepraying for the same intention may gain a partial indulgence.

6) "A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who teach or study Christian doctrine."

7) A plenary indulgence is offered for:
-- an half hour of Eucharistic adoration,
-- reciting Tantum Ergo after Mass on Holy Thursday,
-- participating in a Corpus Christi procession,
-- participating in a Eucharist celebration at the end of a Eucharistic Congress.
partial indulgence is offered for:
-- a visit to the Blessed Sacrament for adoration,
-- offering an approved prayer to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament (e.g., Adoro te devote)

8) A plenary indulgence is offered for:
-- for receiving first Holy Communion or assisting at a first Holy Communion of another,
-- on a Friday of Lent, reciting, after Communion, reciting the prayer En ego, O bone et dulcissime Iesu before a crucifix.
partial indulgence is offered for:
-- an act of spiritual communion,
-- an act of thanksgiving after communion (e.g., Anima Christi)

9) partial indulgence is offered for an examination of conscience (especially before confession) or the recitation of an act of contrition.

10) A plenary indulgence is granted to one who spends at least three entire days in the spiritual exercises of a retreat, and a partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who take part in a month of recollection.

11) A plenary indulgence is offered for participating in services associated with the Week of Christian Unity and a partial indulgence for prayer an approved prayer for the unity of Christians (Omnipotens et misericors Deus).

12) At the point of death, the apostolic blessing has a plenary indulgence attached to it.
Further, if no priest is available the Church extends a plenary indulgence to those at the moment of death who "have been in the habit of reciting some prayers during their lifetime."[!!!]

13) A plenary indulgence is granted to those who,
-- adore the Cross during the liturgy of Good Friday,
-- make the pious Way of the Cross. [Note the requirement associated with this...]

14) A plenary indulgence is granted to those who on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul use an article of devotion blessed by the Supreme Pontiff or other bishop, so long as they also make a Profession of Faith.  The indulgence is partial if the item is blessed by a priest or deacon.

15) "A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer."

16) A plenary indulgence is granted to those that hear some portion of a parish mission and are present "for the solemn conclusion of the mission."  A partial indulgence is granted for those who assist with "attention and devotion" at other preaching.

17) A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who pray the Rosary in a church or with their family, or join the Holy Father for the same (even if by broadcast).  Otherwise, recitation of the rosary has attached to it a partial indulgence.

The faithful are also granted a partial indulgence for reciting,
-- the Magnificat
-- the Angelus/Regina Caeli at dawn, noon, or evening
-- other approved Marian prayers (e.g., Salve Regina, Memorare, Sub tuum praesidium)

18) "A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly invoke the care of their guardian Angel with a duly approved prayer."  The popular "guardian angel prayer" is acceptable.

19) "A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who invoke St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a duly approved prayer."

20) "A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite the prayer Sancti Apostoli Petre et Paule."

21) "A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial day of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint's honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority."

A plenary indulgence is granted "a single time within the year following the canonization or beatification to those faithful who make a visit to a church or an oratory in which a solemn celebration is held in honor of the saint or blessed."  Other such visits receive a partial indulgence.

22) A partial indulgence is granted for, assisting at a public novena, devoutly reciting an approved litany (e.g., Of the Blessed Virgin Mary or of the Saints), or piously recite an approved little office (e.g., of the Blessed Virgin Mary).

23) A variety of indulgences are offered for various prayers from the Eastern Rites of the Church.

24) A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite a duly approved prayer for benefactors.

25) A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who recite a duly approved prayer for the Supreme Pontiff or for a prayer offered for the bishop of a diocese on the beginning or anniversary of his pastoral ministry.

26) A plenary indulgence is offered for the public prayer of the
-- Veni Creator on New Years' Day or Pentecost
-- Te Deum on the last day of the civil year,
and a partial indulgence is granted for the faithful who offer an approved prayer,
-- at the beginning and the end of the day,
-- in starting or completing their work,
-- before and after meals.

27) A plenary indulgence is offered to a priest celebrating his first Mass and those assisting him, to a priest celebrating the twenty-fifth, fiftieth, sixtieth, and seventieth anniversary of his ministry and renewing their priestly promises, and to bishops celebrating their twenty-fifth, fortieth, and fiftieth anniversaries of their ministry.  Likewise, the faithful assisting at Jubilee Masses similarly may receive a plenary indulgence.

28) A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who renew their baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil or on the anniversary of their baptism.
A partial indulgence is granted for a renewal of baptismal vows, for making the sign of the cross, for reciting the Apostles or Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creeds, or reciting approved Acts of Faith, Hope, or Charity.

29) A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful who,
-- visit a cemetery and pray for faithful departed on any and each day from 1 to 8 November,
-- or on All Souls' Day, visit a church or oratory and recite an Our Father and the Creed.
A partial indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is available for visiting a cemetery and praying for the dead, reciting the Lauds or Vespers from the Office of the Dead, or reciting the prayer Requiem aeternam.

30) A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who read Sacred Scripture as spiritual reading, from an approved translation, for at least a half-hour; less than thirty minutes and it is a partial indulgence.

31) A plenary indulgence is granted for the faithful who devoutly visit the church in which a diocesan synod is celebrated and recite an Our Father and the Creed.

32) A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who assist a pastoral visitation.

33) A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit and recite an Our Father and Creed,
-- at one of the Four Patriarchal Basilicas in Rome,
-- at a minor basilica, on the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, its titular feast, 2 August, or annually on a day chosen by the faithful,
-- at a cathedral church, on the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, its titular feast, the feast of the Chair of Peter, the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, or 2 August,
--at a shrine, on its titular feast, annually on a day chosen by the faithful, or when assisting a group pilgrimage visit,
-- at a parish church, on its titular feast, or on 2 August, the day of the "Portiuncula" indulgence.
-- at a church or an altar on the day of its dedication,
-- at a church or oratory of a religious community on the liturgical memorial of their founder.

A plenary indulgence is also granted for the faithful who assist at sacred functions at a stational church on its designated day; if merely a devout visit, the indulgence is partial.

A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit an ancient Christian cemetery or catacomb.

Although that is the list of grants in the manual, there are other means of gaining indulgences.  For instance, during jubilee years there are often special indulgences offered, and membership in various confraternities might also give occasion for additional opportunities.
